Prison, Noncompliance and Civil Disobedience Escalation Chat

July 26, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

This is an informal and safe session to meet people from across the continent that are considering the need to escalate our tactics and strategy in these terrifying and frustrating times of climate breakdown, government inaction and societal complacency.

We’ve marched, we’ve signed petitions, we’ve blocked roads and some of us have been arrested, some of us have gone to prison and others are thinking to follow.

In this space you will hear the latest in the thoughts and reasoning about why an escalation of our disruptive and sacrificial nonviolent struggle to include prison – through noncompliance with police and courts, or through actions that will lead to a prison sentence – is necessary. About 10 minutes.

The rest of the time will be spent in this safe and trusting space to ask questions and talk about your thoughts and feelings at this point in the climate emergency. About 45 minutes.

We acknowledge the many different people from the First Nations of this continent and around the world. We pay our respects to Elders past and present. We honour the young leaders who carry the torch of resistance and culture. We rebel on stolen land, sovereignty was never ceded.

We acknowledge that this conversation takes place in a time of resistance to a system that has oppressed many people. Talking about prison as part of the results of an escalation in tactics and strategy holds a lot of risk and can be a trigger to those who have suffered trauma from the prison system.

We believe everyone has a dignity of risk, but not all risks are the same. We encourage people to seek fully informed consent before taking actions that could result in them being held on remand or in prison.

Protesting is an essential service.
