On Monday we begin what is expected to be the most disruptive action period for Extinction Rebellion South Australia with a three day blockade of the Asia Pacific Oil and Gas Conference.
Every morning there will be action briefings at the southern end of the Adelaide Oval Footbridge (see map). Note that the Monday briefing starts earlier than the briefings on Tuesday and Wednesday.
- Monday October 17 at 7:00am – Day One Facebook Event
- Tuesday October 18 at 7:30am – Day Two Facebook Event
- Wednesday October 19 at 7:30am – Day Three Facebook Event
After the briefings we will be moving into action. If you are arriving later in the day then please meet us directly at the Adelaide Convention Centre. Keep an eye on our social media, particularly Facebook as we will be livestreaming the action throughout the day.
XR welcomes everyones. In line with our principles and values we work actively to create safer and more accessible spaces. The following are measures to support this and to ensure our success as we blockade day after day.
We are encouraging the use of masks throughout the blockade, even when outside and are asking attendees, if possible, to test for Covid-19 before attending each day.
Masks will be available at the morning briefings and from our Action Wellbeing rebels throughout the blockade.
👂🏼 Ear Protection
We are intending to make noise, lots of it. There will be a PA system used throughout the blockade. During certain periods we will be directly encouraging people to make as much noise as possible.
Ear buds will be given out during the morning briefings and available throughout the day from our Action Wellbeing rebels.
The nearest accessible toilets will be at the Adelaide Railway Station.
There are also toilets at:
- Intercontinental Hotel, to the left after you enter main doors
- Morphett Street, east side, between Hindley and Currie Streets
- Coffee Club/Oaks Hotel foyer, North Terrace, opposite Convention Centre
💧 Water & Sun Protection
Our Action Wellbeing rebels will be around with sunscreen, snacks and water. If possible, we ask that you bring your own water, snacks and sun protection. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.
While there are shaded and seated areas around the Convention Centre we will not know whether they are accessible given that police may choose to close off particular areas.
🧑🦽 Wheelchair Access
Rebels from the morning briefings will follow team leaders on a wheelchair accessible path to the Convention Centre. The Convention Centre itself is wheel chair accessible with lifts for both the Eastern and Western entrances.
There are lifts from the footbridge meeting point up to the Convention Centre Plaza and back again for access to railway toilets.
Police may chose to block these pathways in which case we will support rebels to access the blockade.
💚 Principles and Values
We welcome you to take action with us and to provide input about the tactics that we engage with throughout the conference. There will be space for different types of actions. So whether this is your first protest or you’re an experienced activist please join with us in love and rage as we take action together.
Together the climate movement successfully pressured the South Australian government to declare a climate emergency. Now it’s time to turn out in numbers to show that the fossil fuel industry is not welcome here.
