Greetings Rebels,

Welcome to the XRSA June Newsletter. We hope this email finds you safe and well.

Rebels are jumping back into action targeting both the fossil fuel giants and those that fund their crimes. We’ve been in the streets, at the courts and on the news. Pushing our case that civil disobedience is the appropriate, rational and necessary response to governments and corporations that are committing ecocide. Continue reading to find out what we’ve been up to.

Next Steps for New Rebels

National Fuel Blockade

On Thursday rebels blockaded the entrance to Exxon Mobil’s Fuel Distribution Centre in Peterhead. The entrance gate was chained shut. Rebels Anna, Keith, Chris and Margaret locked themselves to the gate with Wayne glued to the ground in front of them. The blockade caused a shutdown of the entire centre. With no tankers entering or leaving for two and a half hours. Tankers set to refuel at the site were informed to not arrive.

Exxon Mobil’s security demanded that rebels be charged with trespass. However police made no arrests and no one was charged. The blockade lead to live coverage on commercial TV channels along with a radio interview.

Across the country local XR groups held blockade actions at fuel depots. Read about them here.

Rebels in Court

Over the last few weeks rebels from our GAS-LED EXTINCTION action at Santos have been in the Magistrate’s Court. Back in March all rebels were successful in having draconian bail conditions revoked.

The day before last weeks hearing Ronny, Jenny, Cate and Sarah, who glued themselves to Flinders Street, had their bail withdrawn and no charges were laid. At last weeks hearing, Ian and Mai who scaled the Santos building plead guilty to the charge of disturbing the peace. No other charges were put by the prosecution.

On Thursday Ian and Mai presented their plea submissions to the court. They received no conviction or penalty and have been ordered to pay compensation for cleaning the windows they covered with spray chalk and wheat paste. In front of the media Ian said: “We have the right to protest and will continue to do so until we get action.”

Thank you to all the rebels who came out to support our conscientious protectors.

Stop NABing Our Future

Late last month and following into this month, rebels have been at the King William Street branch of NAB talking to NAB staff, customers and the public. Despite their attempts at green washing, NAB has lent $7 billion to fossil fuel companies in the last 5 years. They are funding some of the worst fossil fuel projects in Australia (Burrup Hub, Newcastle Coal Port and Narrabri Gas Project).

They are also reviewing their oil and gas policy in September. So rebels are putting the pressure on as part of a national campaign. Learn more here.
