Next Steps for New Rebels

Free the Press

Last Friday rebels staged a dramatic theatrical action outside the Adelaide headquarters of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation drawing attention to the strong ties between Murdoch and the fossil fuel industry.

News Corp papers repeatedly downplay or dismisses climate breakdown and Sky News runs a stable of climate change-denier commentators. They gain extensive advertising revenue from fossil fuel companies and Rupert Murdoch is personally on the board of oil and gas explorer, Genie Energy.

Actions were held across the country with rebels in Brisbane blocking the printing press, those in Sydney dumping shit in front of News Corp offices and our friends in Tasmania disrupting the Mercury with deliberately bad live music. In Adelaide rebels chained themselves together and had oil poured over them by big fossil fuel executives who chummed up to Murdoch. The building was spray chalked with ‘Free the Truth’. See videos from all of these actions here.

Weather Series: Part 3

On the Saturday before last rebels returned to Rundle Mall for the third and final instalment of our Weather Series actions. Holding placards depicting climate driven weather catastrophes rebels made their way through Rundle Mall to Adelaide’s iconic Malls Balls. There a group of koala-dressed rebels covered the bottom half of the balls with a sheet depicting the world on fire. Capturing the public’s attention, the Red Rebel Brigade returned bringing an emotional resonance to the action.

Adelaide says Fund Our Future Not Gas

Friday, September 25th at 11:30 AM – 1 PM
Hindmarsh Square, Adelaide
View Event on Facebook

This action is organised by School Strike 4 Climate. XRSA is providing assistance.
The action is centered on students and First Nations communities, so we ask that you leave XR branded placards, flags, shirts, etc. at home.

Right now, the government is deciding how to spend billions in public money to help with the Covid-19 crisis. It’s a critical opportunity for them to fund our future, by creating jobs that will Care for Country, fast-track solutions to climate change, and transition Australia to renewable energy.

Instead, secret plans have revealed that the Federal Government is planning to give billions to their mates in the dirty gas industry. Gas is a dangerous fossil fuel that will turbocharge the climate crisis. Even worse, many destructive gas projects threaten First Nations lands.

There’s still time to stop the government’s dirty gas plans. But we need to show them that Australians everywhere want them to #FundOurFutureNotGas!

That’s why on Friday September 25th, First Nations communities, school students, unions, and many more will host actions in towns, suburbs, schools, and workplaces across Australia!
