Next Steps for New Rebels:

Autumn Rebellion

Watch Autumn Rebellion Campaign Launch Video

A wave of non-violent rebellion is about to roll across the global.

Climate breakdown is here.

Catastrophic bushfires, flash floods, extreme drought, water shortages, mass animal extinction, a dead reef.

Business as usual is killing us. The earth is too hot and the natural world is dying. We are close to the point of no return for a hothouse earth, risking billions of deaths and the collapse of organised human society.

Only unprecedented emergency action can save us now. But our political system is rigged. Rebellion is our last and best hope.

Mass non-violent civil disobedience is the most effective tool we have to create the systemic changes we need. It’s time to mobilise every part of our communities to build an unstoppable mass movement. Every day of inaction increases the threat to life itself.

Across April, May and June citizens from around the world will be mounting rebellion in waves. In Australia, we are holding the Autumn Rebellion from May 2nd.

At the Autumn Rebellion affinity groups will be playing a large role in both organizing their own actions and participating in larger scale actions. We are scaling up the number of affinity groups and will be running induction sessions in Thebarton, Surrey Downs, Aldinga and online over the coming month.

We are also training rebels to fill roles at actions with Conscientious Protector training this weekend and Marshal training on the following weekend.

It’s time to rise up and rebel for life.

Recent Actions

Acting for Life: Festival Die In

This summer, bushfires have killed more than 1,000,000,000 animals. Between 2030 – 2050, the climate emergency will cause at least 250,000 human deaths per year. To bear witness to this tragedy, we staged a funeral procession followed by a die-in at the heart of the Adelaide Fringe.

Governments fiddle. Our country burns.

At this symbolic action rebels drew upon imagery of Emperor Nero who is said to have fiddled while Rome burned. Rebels sang, played various string instruments and asked the question ‘Why are our governments fiddling while the country, our home, is burning?’.

Welcome to Parliament

The climate crisis is here and as state parliament returned for 2020 rebels performed a mock ‘Welcome to Parliament’ ceremony.

Following last year’s climate emergency declaration the public expectation was that action would start immediately. This hasn’t happened. In our theatrical street performance the speaker of the house calls three ministers to account. ?

  • The Minister for Procrastination
  • The Minister for Too Little Too Late
  • The Minister for Slow Lane

They then dissolved the house to make way for citizens assembly on climate and ecological justice. Watch the action video to see the full performance.

To coincide with the Tour Down Under, rebels cycled along the Tour Down Under route the from McLaren Vale to Willunga. Watch the video to see the entire action collapsed into a one minute timelapse.

Upcoming Actions

Media Lie In. Truth Die In

Wednesday, March 11th at 4:30 PM – 6 PM
Intercontinental Hotel, North Terrace (Next to Railway Station)
View Event on Facebook

Prior to the federal election the documentary Dirty Power revealed the collusion between politicians, the fossil fuel industry and the media.

Three blockers to the climate and ecological truth!

Post-election it is clear that social media is also a fourth major blocker to the truth, and is an unregulated peddler of misinformation and lies.

Climate trolls and bots are capable of spreading climate fallacies at dry lightning speed. Algorithms perpetuate control over news and reinforce divisions. Furthermore, tech companies that buy and sell our personal data also allow the building of an arsenal against our democracy, and the truth that needs to be revealed.

Come and join us the Die In outside of the railway station. Rebels will be laying on the ground ‘as if dead’, in order to demonstrate that our current situation is threatening humanity. Alternatively, you are welcome to hold provided banners, highlighting why we’re taking action.

This action is organised by the Eastern Affinity Group. Rebels from this affinity group have organised other components to this action. Please arrive for briefing to hear all the details.

What to Wear: Come as you are.
What to Bring: A white sheet to use as a shroud and a yoga mat for comfort.

During this workshop you will be able to meet other locals who share your concern about the climate and ecological crisis we are facing and want to take action together. The workshop explores the principles and values at the heart of Extinction Rebellion that will hold us united as we move with courage into the next phase of our work together.

At the workshop you will be invited to join with local rebels in taking action as part of an affinity group. These small groups of rebels are proven to be effective at enhancing activist support, sustainability and safety. At the next rebellion, affinity groups will be playing an important role in both running their own actions and being apart of our larger actions.

Regenerative Culture Workshop

Saturday, March 14th at 10 AM – 1 PM
Room 10.3 (10th floor), Flinders University, Victoria Square, Adelaide
RSVP on Action Network

Have you ever wondered what Regenerative Culture is? Or, how you might support rebels in XRSA as part of the Regenerative Culture Working Group?

Advocacy for regenerative culture needs to be in all parts of XRSA so that we feel supported as rebels while challenging the degenerative system within which we live. This is THE work of XR and is the basic building block for everything we do. This workshop invites you to learn about regenerative culture and consider how it might help us be the best activist we can.

Extinction Rebellion has challenged us to build a new type of culture for action which is full of ‘regenerative processes’: regeneration not degeneration. If we are to meet this challenge, we need to practise the change that we want to become.

We invite you to join us in finding regenerative ways of being rebels and inspiring a rebellion.

Conscientious Protector Training

Sunday, March 15th at 12:30 PM – 5 PM
Adelaide, Venue provided on RSVP
RSVP on Action NetworkView Event on Facebook

Extinction Rebellion conducts training for new and aspiring activists concerned about the lack of action on the ecological emergency, widespread extinctions, and rising global temperatures. Based on the principles of non-violent direct action (NVDA), this training will give you the skills to engage in civil resistance, a peaceful and disruptive form of direct action.

Marshal Training

Sunday, March 22nd at 12:45 PM – 3:30 PM
Thebarton, Venue provided on RSVP
RSVP on Action NetworkView Event on Facebook

Marshals help make a civil disobedience action focussed and effective, with major impact. Their skills include directing and informing other rebels, with care for all. Marshals responsible for liaison with police and security staff play an important role. Building these skills and building our team of marshals is the focus of this training. If you have done the XR Conscientious Protector Training, please register and come along.

DNA Workshop – Online

The growth of Extinction Rebellion has been explosive across the globe. Following from natural processes, Extinction Rebellion has a core ‘DNA’. This acts as the base for all our activities. The DNA includes: our demands, 10 principles and values, and our organisation structure. In this workshop you will learn more about these key characteristics of Extinction Rebellion and how you might fit into the growing Extinction Rebellion organism.

This workshop is the next step for those who’ve seen our Heading for Extinction talk and wish to contribute their skills and passion to the movement.
