Hello Rebels,

Prior to the onset of summer, the climate crisis remained a nebulous and distant concern for many Australians and consequently, the dire warnings of scientists fell on deaf ears. With dozens of lives lost, thousands of dwellings razed to the ground and over a billion of our cherished native animals sadly lost, the people are now listening. We must remind them that the carnage wrought upon our nation in the last couple of months was not an unforeseeable event; it was a conflagration predicted with scary precision by Ross Garnaut a dozen years ago.

A half dozen Prime Ministers from both sides of politics were in receipt of these warnings, yet they did not act. Our leaders are betraying the people by not looking after the common good of the environment, not looking after the common good of public health and not looking after the common good of public safety. Since the outbreak of raging and monstrous fires, it has emerged that Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton sat on an urgent climate risk action plan for over 18 months. Willful blindness is no longer an option and public momentum is swinging towards supporting wartime government mobilisation to tackle the climate crisis. It’s our job at XR to crank up the pressure and lead the planet towards the best possible outcome. There are many ways for you to get involved prior to our next international rebellion in April. A rebellion that just might trigger the change needed.

#ListenToThem: Solidarity Vigil for Bushfire Victims

Friday, January 17th at 7:30 PM
Parliament of South Australia

View Event on Facebook

This action is organised by School Strike 4 Climate.

Snippet from their Facebook event page:

Come along to Adelaide Parliament House at 7:30PM to show solidarity, and hear from people on the frontlines of this crisis through a screening of people’s experiences, speeches, tributes and live performances.

It is important to recognise that these bushfires are unprecedented, as with other major weather events around the world, are increased in duration, frequency and intensity in the effect of climate change. However we would like for this event to not be political motivated and ask for no political insignia and rally signs to be brought along: bring a DONATION of either cash or requested goods, a wreath/flowers (plastic free), as well as all your friends and family.

Stillness

Sunday, January 19th at 2 PM – 3 PM
Botanic Park, Adelaide
View Event on Facebook

This action intends to create a space in which people can come to stillness in the presence of that which might be lost. With the canopies of the great Moreton Bay fig trees in Botanic Park overhead, we can connect to a place and a sense of deep time.

Stillness may take the form of quiet walking, seated meditation, prayer, or more formal types of meditative movement.

Meet opposite the Friend’s Gate in Botanic Park on Plane Tree Drive.

Bring a mat, rug or even chair if you need to sit. This action has been organised by the XR Up North Affinity Group.

Swarm Down Under

Sunday, January 26th at 9:30 AM – 12 PM
McLaren Vale & Fleurieu Visitor Information Centre, 796 Main Road McLaren Vale,
View Event on Facebook

Our bicycle swarm will follow the Tour Down Under race along the closed main road route from McLaren Vale to Willunga. This will not be disruptive, our aim is to be visible to the TDU community and connect with them in a respectful way. So come with t-shirts and flags. We’ll bring some too! Bring your cycling friends, of all skill levels.

We’ll ride the 8km route at a gentle pace. Meet at the McLaren Vale Information Centre at 9.30am in time for bike decorating and a briefing. We’ll set off immediately after the main race starts at 10:40.

Catch the train! There’s a lovely off road bike track from Seaford Station direct to the Information Centre. Remember your helmets, sun protection and plenty of water. The event is organized by XR Down South.

The growth of Extinction Rebellion has been explosive across the globe. Following from natural processes, Extinction Rebellion has a core ‘DNA’. This acts as the base for all our activities. The DNA includes: our demands, 10 principles and values, and our organisation structure. In this workshop you will learn more about these key characteristics of Extinction Rebellion and how you might fit into the growing Extinction Rebellion organism.

This workshop is the next step for those who’ve seen our Heading for Extinction talk and wish to contribute their skills and passion to the movement.
